Masterclass Overview

RBI stands for Risk Based Inspection and is a methodology applied in the Hydrocarbon and Chemical Processing Industry as part of their Process Safety Management. This is done in order to operate and manage assets and Equipment which is exposed to hazardous chemicals and pressure in a safe manner. The approach is one of many methodologies used to maintain assets are in a safe and reliable condition to keep the chemicals/fluids/gases inside of the pressure boundaries as per the original design criteria. In most countries around the globe, the surveillance of these pressure vessels or pipelines containing hazardous chemicals are regulated with rigid inspection programs.

Dr. ROBERT KAUER
(Dipl.-Ing., Dr.-Ing.)

Robert Kauer has in total 30+ years of work experience. He received his engineering degree and Ph.D. from Technical University of Munich. Since earning his degrees, he has been working in the field of pressure vessel and piping technology, starting as an R&D engineer at the Institute of Pressure Vessel and Piping Design, Experimental Stress Analysis and Plant Engineering in Munich where teaching and examination of students was a major part of his work.

Since almost 20 years Robert is with TÜV Süd, one of the leading Testing, Inspection and Certification companies in the word. Throughout his service at TÜV SÜD, Dr. Kauer has handled various national and international projects related Fitness for Service, structural integrity and inspection to design,program development for nuclear and non-nuclear applications in pressure vessel and piping technology. Under those are life time extension programs for nuclear power plants as well as individual failure assessment projects where in depth knowledge in Finite-element Analysis and Fracture Mechanics were required. Part of this work always was promoting results and conclusions of such projects in front of authorities and insurance companies.

Robert was responsible for Consulting Projects for the Oil & Gas, the Chemical and the Power Plant Industry related to Fitness for Service, Risk-based Inspection (RBI) and Asset Integrity Programs.

He is and was member of various national and European committees like CEN TC319 for the European RBI standard EN 16991. He holds a commission as an ASME Authorized Inspector Supervisor and he is member of the ASME International Working Group for Germany. He has initiated and monitored the TÜV SÜD programs for Fitness for Service, Risk-based Inspection, Asset Integrity Management and Process Safety Excellence.

Robert has written more than 50 publications for internationally recognized journals and conferences. He has been invited numerous times to present newest development and experience related to pressure vessel and piping technology and acted as key note speaker and chairman at conferences in Europe, the USA and Asian countries.

Robert is teaching courses in the field of pressure vessel and piping construction (e.g. ASME Sect. VIII, Div. 1 and 2, EN 13445, B31.3) as well as in-service inspection requirement like API 510, API 570, API 580 and API 581. Internationally recognized companies have already benefited from his experience, such as Chevron, Samsung, OMV, AkzoNobel, Exxon, BP, Bayer, Sabic, Maersk. He is also an appointed instructor for ASME Learning and Development having teached more than 70 courses around the world.
